HARRISBURG, Pa., June 26 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ — PennDOT will be partnering with state and local police to crack down on aggressive and impaired drivers during the 4th of July holiday.
“We hope that everyone celebrates the holiday in a safe and responsible way,” said PennDOT Secretary Allen D. Biehler, P.E. “If your holiday plans include travel, remember to designate a sober driver, buckle up and avoid aggressive driving. Following these tips will help to ensure everyone arrives safely.”
There were 366 crashes and 10 fatalities reported during last year’s 4th of July; an additional 810 crashes and 11 fatalities occurred during the weekends before and after the holiday.
To deter dangerous driving behavior, police have kicked off a wave of Smooth Operator enforcement, which will run through July 6. Motorists will be ticketed and fined for aggressive driving such as speeding, tailgating, running red lights and weaving through traffic. During the previous enforcement blitz in April, nearly 60,000 citations and arrests were recorded.
Along with Smooth Operator, police will also target impaired drivers with roving patrols and checkpoints. Alcohol was cited as a contributing factor in 141 crashes and seven fatalities last year, and State Police made 344 DUI arrests.
PennDOT also reminds motorists to drive safely in highway work zones and to remember to turn on their headlights when signs instruct them to do so.
While PennDOT will attempt to remove lane restrictions where possible, motorists may still have to negotiate lane restrictions in larger projects. Motorists can visit and click on “Traveler Information” for information regarding ongoing projects on interstates and other high-volume highways.
